Councilmember Stan Flemming was elected to the Pierce County Council in November 2010. Before assuming this position, he served as a member of the Washington State House of Representatives representing the 28th Legislative District and as the Founding Mayor, Mayor Pro Tem, and Councilmember for the City of University Place. In addition to his elected positions, he has served our community and state in a number of appointed positions that include President of the county telecommunications commission, Chairman of the Board of The Evergreen State College, and President of Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences and Medical School. In 1995, he was one of two finalists considered by the Clinton Administration for Surgeon General of the United States.

CM Flemming is a Board Certified family medicine physician in addition to holding sub-specialties in the areas of adolescent, HIV/AIDS related diseases, and aviation medicine with over twenty-five years experience in public and private practice, academic and military medicine, aviation medicine, health policy, and health care administration. He holds the academic rank of Clinical Associate Professor of Family Medicine from Western University of Health Sciences.

In addition to his civic and medical careers, Doctor Flemming served a distinguished career in the United States Army, having completed two combat tours of duty and rising to the rank of Brigadier General.

He is a graduate of Pierce College (AA&S); The University of Washington - Seattle (B.S.); Pacific Lutheran University (M.A.); The United States Naval War College (M.A.); The United States Army War College Defense Strategy Course; The United States Air Force War College; Harvard University School of Public Health - Physician Leadership Education Program, and Western University of Health Sciences - Pomona (D.O.).

As a community leader, Doctor Flemming has served on numerous boards and commissions to include a United Way board, a county health department, an economic development council, and the Veterans Memorial Committee in University Place.

Stan and his wife (the former Miss Martha Light) have three adult children and a son-in-law; they live in University Place.
